Once the showy blooms fade and drop from the prickly pear cactus, a fruit is left behind that eventually ripens into a deep reddish maroon shade. The fruit on the opuntia cactus is not only beautiful, but helps to feed so many critters in the desert during our summer months when food sources tend to be scarce. If there are any left to consume, they make a very tasty jam and a tangy margarita!
