No desert bloom has as dramatic a contrast as the prickly pear cactus. This past spring it seemed to be the most abundant in terms of cactus flowers. At the beginning of the season I often saw an enthusiastic pear in full bloom well ahead of its siblings still in the bud stage. Emerging from a thorny pad, these delicate blooms are a remarkable juxtaposition to the host plant.
